Ana listens, but doesn't hear. Or maybe she doesn't want to hear, and only pretends to listen. She learned this from her mother, and when they talk, they talk past each other.
The story involves the kitchen tile and the living room upholstery, and Ana could not care less.
- So Dorry and I went to Lowe’s and found this gorgeous glass tile for around the kitchen sink. But it was way too expensive, like $20 a sheet, right Jack?
(From the living room ottoman, "Sure.")
- So Dorry, she’s so naughty. She takes a sheet of this tile over to one of the high school boys working there.
Blah. Blah. Blah.
- Mother, that is a horrible story.
- You hush. Paul, are you ready for another drink?
(From the living room couch, "Uhhh...ok?")
- And she convinced me to try the same thing with the guy at Ethan Allen. Only he wasn’t a boy. Just look at these swatches, Ana, aren’t they wonderful?
- Mother.
