Fugue #116

The reeds grow out of the shallow end of the pond, lose their balance, and dip back in the water. Shapes, symbols, messages that we shouldn’t understand, but still do.

Summer sunset, and the water is the color of the sky. A golden broth, a golden drowse.

"You coming?" Emily stands up and pulls off first her shorts, then her shirt. Her swimsuit is a one-piece, all shades of blue with white piping and a racer back. She pulls back her hair into a ponytail.

Gene smiles and takes off his shirt. He sits and leans back on his elbows, then nods, "Tell me if it’s cold." It’s late July, evening, and it’s still hot, even though the sun is setting behind the trees over the pond.

Emily raises her eyebrows, "You think that water might be cold? Really?!" She tilts her head and winks. " I’m going in." She turns and runs - all lines and grace, and her toes point into the sand, then into the water. One step splash, high knees, two step splash, higher knees, three step big splash as she dives, and comes up further from shore.

"Brrrrr..." she laughs. He laughs, too, she can hear him. He kicks off his sandals, stands up, and runs. She swims to the platform and pulls herself up to wait for him.
