Fractured newspaper accounts: the headlines clear, the stories less so.
America! (they say) We are under attack. Invincibility stolen, isolation pierced. Who’s responsible? Tell us. Now. Now. Don’t tell us about us, tell us about them. Who they are and why they did this. Wait...not them, not yet: Us. First tell us about us. Our pain and our pride.
If we could only get back to who we were on September 10th, we could take stock, make mental notes, prepare for tomorrow with an understanding of today. We were so naive, but not because we were innocent. Because we were amnesiac. Out of touch with our past, and where we came from.
We don’t return, we retreat (beaten, broken, but still standing) to first principles:
- Who are we?
- How do we express this?
The answers, not as obvious as they used to be or as we want them to be, will come.
Zed, satisfied, closes his computer.
