Darker and darker.
The cd stops. It’s quiet. We sit looking at each other, at our hands, outside.
Darker. We wait for something to happen. Forever almost, for something to begin. He moves from the floor toward me on the bed. Darker and quieter, until sound disappears. His hand my knee his eyes...
Then a call from downstairs - Mom, "Dinner" - and he leaves.
He leaves me.
Thinking, does he know what he’s doing? Asking, when?
And after dinner, after homework, after phone calls, absently singing,
Goodnight stars
Goodnight moon
(Another strain of melody - muted, farther off, inside my head: Goodnight light and the red balloon)
Goodnight friends,
I’ll see you soon.
