Fugue #115

Ana reads Cosmo while Paul drives. They’re past Omaha, headed toward Denver. The road is very long and very straight.

- You have any of those Bit-o-Honeys left?
- No. Sunflower seeds?
- No thanks. Bored more than hungry anyway.
- Gum.
- Ok.

Paul hands her a chunk of Bubblicious. She pops it in her mouth without looking at it. It’s more flavor than she bargained for.

- Oh. My. God. What IS this?
- (looking at package) Tropical Sunset?
- Wha?
- Tropical Sunset. There’s a picture of a beach, with the sun going down over the sea, and a cornucopia filled with pineapples, oranges, bananas, a papaya? or is that a bottle of red wine?, and a tube of sunscreen maybe.
- Oh my god. Paul.
- Sounded good back in Des Moines.
- This tastes like that awful smell.
- What awful smell?
- The one I thought was a hog farm back like two hours ago.
- Really? I had a piece of this gum two hours ago. I didn’t think it was that bad.
- And it’s so big (gags), sorry...

She opens up her window and tosses the bruise-colored gum to the shoulder.
