
The county fair.
Gene and Emily have a fight, and neither is sure how it started, how to stop it, or what it’s even about anymore.
- Do you want to go on the ferris wheel?
- Sure. Fine. Whatever.
- Do you want to go on the Himalayan?
- Sure. Fine. Whatever.
- Do you want cotton candy?
- Sure.
- Do you want a pop?
- Fine.
- Do you want a slap across your obstinate face?
- Whatever.
- Do you want to break up? I'm serious, Gene.
- ...
- Gene? I’m serious. I can’t do this. I love you too much, I love us too much to let this happen.
- I don't care, Em. I don't care what we do. I want you to decide.
- I have. Don’t you see?! You need to decide.
- I have. Don’t you see?! You need to decide.
It was a long summer of delight fading to wisdom. They saw each other a lot, too much probably - anxious that they would be going away to school, different schools, so soon.
